Mixing the Soil
Open your potting mix and add a small amount of water. Squish the bag until it clumps together like clay, adding more water, a little at a time as needed. If your soil is too wet, press a paper towel onto the surface to remove any excess moisture.
Growing Tips
Be sure not use too many seeds all at one time, crowding them may prevent growth. In most cases, your garden will begin to sprout in 3-4 days. For best results, keep your terrarium or garden in a warm sunny place. If your seeds are not sprouting, check to be sure the soil is damp, misting as needed.
Watering really depends on the conditions of the room, hot, cold, sunny, windy… The plants, seeds and soil need to be kept damp. During the early germination process, if the seeds are not kept damp, the germination will stop and the seeds are no longer viable.
If your garden gets too wet or humid, you may notice some new fuzzy growth appear. These are little plants called mold. Remove the lid and let your garden dry a bit - air circulation helps. The mold is nature's way of breaking down the seeds and plant material to create new soil.
Chia plants typically live for 2 weeks to a month, depending on the care.
Over time your garden will need to be replanted. Your kit comes with enough materials to plant your garden twice. Additional seeds can be purchased at your local garden center.
Can Bugs Be Added to the Terrarium Kits?
We do not recommend adding insects such as lady bugs, lightening bugs etc. We suggest leaving our insect friends in their natural habitat. This allows them to seek out the food, shelter and natural life cycle that is most suitable for them. If you want to do a brief scientific observation, the terrarium kits would be suitable for this purpose. Handle them with care and quickly return them to their natural habitat.
Grow Light - Is Sold Out
The Grow Light has been discontinued and is no longer available. You can successfully grow your garden by placing it in or near a sunny window. As your garden grows, be sure to keep the soil moist. If the plants get too tall, you can trim them with a pair of scissors. Planting the extra seeds your kit came with as needed, will keep your garden growing for months.
